Gypsum was initially discovered here in 1873 by the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Mining and manufacturing started in 1876 by the Sub Wealden Gypsum Company Limited. In 2003 a £ investment at the plant extended capacity by 30%. The plant as it stands today is one of the most advanced of its kind in Europe.
